Facts

  • The Church of Notre-Dame became a cathedral on June 27th, 1870.
  • Between 1935 and 1938, the existing building was expanded according to plans drawn up by the architect Hubert Schumacher, which also included the construction of the two towers.
  • Rebuilding of the fire-damaged tower was completed on October 17th, 1985.
  • The most recent restoration was carried out between 1977 and 1978. The vertical dynamism of the church was accentuated and the sculptural elements were further highlighted.
  • On April 5, 1985, welding work started a fire in the old belfry resulting in its destruction. The roof above the central nave was also damaged when the belfry collapsed.
