Facts

  • St. Xavier College was founded on this block in 1831. The first catholic institution of higher education in the old Northwest Territory, it moved to the Avondale neighborhood in 1919 before being renamed Xavier University.
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
  • The building was badly damaged by fire in April 1882. It was promptly renovated, including a new roof, and new tower designed by Samuel Hannaford, working alone.
