This is the third building to house this congregation at this site. The first was destroyed by a storm in 1859, the second by fire in 1907.
Before construction of the first building on this lot, the congregation met at the original Hamline University building, which was located across the street, now the site of Central Park. Hamline is now located in St. Paul.
The First United Methodist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as a contributing member of the Red Wing Mall Historic District.
