Facts

  • The name of the apartments comes from the fact that the building was used for eight decades to manufacture ice. It has 13-inch thick walls lined with cork.
  • Measured by square footage, this is the largest residential renovation project to have been completed in Downtown Kansas City, Mo., to date.
  • Because of the building's massive square footprint, an atrium was cut through the thick concrete floors to let in natural light. The most difficult aspect of the project was thawing out the old building from decades of sub-zero cold to every day temperatures without cracking it to pieces.
  • Despite being listed on the city, state and federal historic registers, the U. S. Department of the Interior granted an exemption so that 142 windows could be punched through the previously blank walls of the former ice company.
