Facts

  • This skyscraper proposal was announced by former President Moi in 1989.
  • Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai successfully campaigned for the project to be cancelled, and gained the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for her efforts.
  • The skyscraper was unpopular due to the fact that it would have been built on Uhuru Park, one of Nairobi's most prominent.
  • The tower was to be the new headquarters of the KANU (Kenya African National Union) party, which had been in power since independence.
  • On completion, the tower would have been the tallest in Africa and would have included a statue of President Moi, which would have been the largest statue of a political figure in Africa.
