Facts

  • This building was sold to Tubman, with plans for rehabilitation into a women's shelter.
  • The building consists of a residential tower running northwest to southeast and a lower west wing housing the Benedictine Retreat and Conference Center.
  • Floors two through six of the residential tower are cantilevered over the first floor on the southeast end.
  • One bell hangs within a small cutout at the upper right corner of the southwest facade.
  • The facade consists of rough-hewn Kasota stone, a yellow limestone prevalent in Minnesota.
  • The residential tower features a gentle curve to the north as it meets the western wing. The punch-windows on this short north-south section are framed in exposed structural concrete.
  • In February 2009, the nuns moved to the new St. Paul's Monastery, directly to the north.
  • The Benedictine nuns who founded St. Paul's Monastery came from the St. Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, the largest community of Benedictine women in the western hemisphere.
  • The narrow southeast facade contains recessed balconies framed in the exposed structural concrete.
  • Windows on the long facade facing southwest are recessed into a brick wall, and covered with a modified concrete brise-soleil.
  • The cantilevered section is supported by two large, angled concrete columns.
  • St. Paul's Monastery was founded in 1948 in the neighboring city of St. Paul, moving to this location in 1965.
