Facts

  • Designed by New York sculptor Alexander Doyle, the statue was originally placed on February 22, 1884.
  • Features a 70-foot Doric column of Tennessee limestone topped with a 18 1/2-foot bronze statue of Lee.
  • Upon completion of the monument, Tivoli Circle as it was originally named, was renamed Lee Circle.
  • Erected in honor of the Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
  • Located where St. Charles Avenue and Howard Avenue intersect, this is encircled by the historic St. Charles streetcar line.
