  • In 1942, the bridge was renamed for Douglas MacArthur, an American general and Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific during World War II.
  • Although it was originally called the "Free Bridge", a toll was charged a few years before the bridge closed in 1981 due to pavement deterioration; the western ramps were demolished. Trains continue to use the lower deck.
