The name Strykjärnet (Swedish for "The Flatiron") refers to the building's shape where it's built on a rock in the middle of the Motala Stream.
Originally built for the city's once blooming textile industry, the building has been occupied by the Museum of Work since 1991.
Placed second in the category "Sweden's best building of all time" in an extensive public poll during the Swedish Year of Architecture 2001. The competition was won by Kiruna kyrka while Stockholm Stadshus came in third.
