Facts

  • The tower was originally built by the city in 1962 when MCI was the overhaul base for defunct Trans World Airlines. TWA was headquartered in Kansas City before moving to New York City in the late 60's.
  • The FAA purchased and upgraded the soon-to-be KCI Airport in 1969. It replaced Charles Wheeler Downtown Airport as the main airport for commercial aviation in November 1972.
