Facts

  • Little Rock High School became world-famous in 1957 as the center of conflict over racial desegregation.
  • The conflict began when nine African-American students were denied entry in defiance of the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision.
  • Resistance was so violent that federal troops were required to protect the African American students.
  • All city high schools were closed by the governor in 1958 as a further act of defiance.
  • The conflict slowly resolved after schools were reopened in 1959.
