Facts

  • Constructed with funds from FDR's WPA program, this stadium seats 24,000 spectators.
  • This was the first major spectator sports facility erected by the City of Charlotte.
  • Named in honor of the soldiers who served in World War I from Mecklenburg County.
  • Served as the home field for the World Football League's Charlotte Hornets from 1974-1976 and for the American Soccer League's Carolina Lightnin' from 1981-1984.
  • The first event held in the stadium was the Green Pastures Rally highlighted by a speech from then President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 10, 1936.
  • Served as the location of the annual Shrine Bowl from 1937 through 2000, which pitted the best high school football players from North and South Carolina against each other.
  • Dedicated on September 26, 1936, prior to a college football game between the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest College.
