  • Originally constructed from 1939-1941 for the War Department, the eastern section was designed by Underwood & Foster.
  • The Secretary of War never moved into this building, instead waiting for the 1943 completion of The Pentagon in Arlington, across the Potomac River.
  • The State Department began moving into this building in 1947, and the building was renamed in 1951 for its new primary tenant.
  • A major extension to the west was constructed in 1957-1960 to the designs of Harley-Probst.
