Facts

  • The original Fayette County Courthouse was a Greek Revival structure, completed in 1849.
  • The architect, William S. Kaufman, was the supervising architect for the Wayne County Courthouse in Richmond, about 20 miles to the northeast.
  • The current courthouse incorporated and expanded the previous structure, unifying it with a romanesque revival design. The older building was essentially remodeled out of existence.
  • Even though the Fayette County structure was completed two years earlier, the plans for the Wayne County structure existed first. There are obvious similarities in design.
