Facts

  • The belfry tower collapsed on the 21st October1914 during the Great War, after it was hit by 69 shells from German artillery. The reconstruction started in 1923.
  • On the top of the tower, a gold plated lion is mounted. The lion holds a standard with a shining sun. A feature which was added to the statue, when French King Louis XIV visited the city.
