Wells Cathedral
the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew

Structure in General

existing [completed]
applied masonry

  • The present cathedral of Wells was the first cathedral in England to be built in gothic style.
  • The cathedral was constructed on a new site, located north of its predecessor.
  • The west façade was constructed between 1209 and 1210. It is 150 feet (45.72 m) wide and its two towers, which were built by the end of 14th and the beginning of the 15th century are 100 feet (30.48 m) tall.
  • The width of the nave is exactly half of the width of the west façade.
  • The west façade possesses about 500 niches preserving more than 300 religious statues.
  • The west façade was thoroughly cleansed and renovated from 1974 to 1986.
  • A building pause took place at the beginning of the 13th century. This can be seen in the use of different stone sizes and more precisely cut stones. Since a better lifting gear was used, bigger stones could be lifted.
  • Because the pillars under the central tower started to sink, additional supporting pillars and arches were added. These structures are known as the ‘scissor arches’, constructed circa 1338.
  • In the 15th century, the spire of the central tower burned down and was not rebuilt because of stability issues this tower encountered in the past.
  • The cathedral's 182-foot central tower was constructed from 1315 to 1322.
  • The unfinished building was dedicated in 1239, and largely closed-in and finished by 1306 with the completion of the cathedral's chapter house. Numerous expansions occurred until the completion of the northwest tower of the West Front in 1435.
  • If measuring the width of the cathedral's west front, the structure is 147 feet (45 meters) in width.
  • The towers of the west front rise to a height of 124 feet (38 meters), with the quire rising to a height of 73 feet (22 meters), and the nave 67 feet (20.5 meters) in height.
