  • Public Law 103-32 signed by President Bill Clinton on May 25, 1993, authorized the ABMC to establish what became this memorial.
  • President Clinton dedicated the site of the memorial on Veterans Day 1995 at the Rainbow Pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.
  • Construction began in September 2001 and was open to the public on April 29, 2004.
  • This was officially dedicated on Saturday, May 29, 2004.
  • This honors the 16 million Americans who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
  • Each of the 50 states and territories that sent troops to the war effort are recognized with individual pillars surrounding the main fountain.
