Facts

  • The current cathedral sits on the site of a monastery founded in 589 AD by St. David.
  • In 1247/1248 the cathedral was damaged by an earthquake.
  • Most of the cathedral was built during the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries.
  • The cathedral was largely destroyed by Parliamentarian soldiers in 1648 during the English Civil War.
  • The West front was rebuilt by John Nash in 1793.
  • Sir George Gilbert Scott undertook much of the restoration from 1862 to 1877.
