Facts

  • This building is home to the oldest African-American church congregation in the State of Indiana, founded in 1836.
  • Originally constructed in the neo-classical style for German Methodists, the building was acquired by Hicksite Quakers in 1857 before being turned over to the Bethel A.M.E. congregation.
  • In 1892 the building was significantly enlarged in the romanesque style.
  • The Bethel A.M.E. Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
