Facts

  • The tower was built with bricks and covered by marble.
  • Built by Ariberto, Archbishop of Milan on the site of the Duomo piazza and was the bell tower of Santa Maria Maggiore, the city's first cathedral.
  • During the war between the Dukes of Milan and the Emperor Friedrich I "Barbarossa", the bell-tower was destroyed by the Lodi Army, allies of the Emperors. The tower collpased on the Cathedral.
