Facts

  • This is the new control tower for Heathrow airport which is the world's busiest international airport and hub of the world's international aviation travel.
  • The control tower section was fabricated on site and moved 2km (1.2 miles) across the airfield to its current site, adjacent to Terminal 3.
  • The tower rises from a three-storey administrative and technical building.
  • The tower was constructed to replace the old tower (built 1955), and was designed to be tall enough to see the new £4.2bn Terminal 5 extension.
  • This is the tallest aircraft control tower in Britain.
  • The top of the tower can be accessed by an internal stairway.
  • The tower is anchored to the ground by three pairs of steel cable-stays.
  • The control room manifests itself in the form of an inverted truncated cone, below which is a decorative red band in the traditional Richard Rogers Partnership style.
  • The five-storey control room section weighs 900 tonnes, is 27 metres (86 feet) tall and is supported by a 4.6 metre (15-feet) diameter steel mast made from eight 12 metre (39-feet) sections.
  • The control tower is the most advanced in Europe and has been designed to offer the best field of view of any aircraft control tower in the world.
