Facts

  • Bigelow Chapel serves the ecumenical community of the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. Students come from backgrounds as diverse as the United Church of Christ, Roman Catholic, Unitarian Universalist, Congregational, Baptist, and Jewish traditions.
  • The architects were recognized with dozens of awards, culminating in a 2006 Honor Award for Architecture from the National Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
  • The same firm received a national AIA Award for another religious project, the Colonial Church of Edina, in 1980.
  • The column-free chapel is enclosed by a glass curtain wall, allowing abundant natural light. Inside this glass box are long maple panels that undulate along the ceiling, before curving down along the windows to meet the floor.
  • Joan Sorrano, AIA was the design architect.
