Facts

  • This arch is a monument to the labor movement in Michigan. It was developed by the Michigan Labor History Society.
  • The arc sits on a circular platform which includes five Vermont boulders, and also fourteen bronze reliefs depicting themes of labor.
  • The stainless steel, broken arc rises 63 feet in height, and is completed by a blue light that joins the two pieces of the arc, which is supposed to symbolize the continued struggle of the labor movement.
  • The arch is inscribed with this quote by Martin Luther King, Jr., "The arc of history bends toward justice." This was the part of his "I have a Dream" speech, which he previewed at Campus Marius just a few blocks north of this site.
