Facts

  • This gate was constructed as a monument to Chauncey Hurlbut, an early Detroit Board of Water Commissioner.
  • The gate stands as a grand entrance to Waterworks Park, a decorative, but functioning park for the purifying of the City of Detroit's water system.
  • The gate is an excellent example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture. It stands over 50 feet in height, 132 feet in length, and is constructed of heavy Bedford limestone.
  • The structure is all that now stands of the once extensive Waterworks Park. The greenspace is now gated off, as the city can no longer pay for regular upkeep of the gate nor the park.
