Facts

  • Construction on the building started in June 1924 with the laying of the cornerstone.
  • To save on the construction cost the alumni secretary planned an "Excavation Week" in November of 1923, in which the students, faculty, and other supporters of the college dug out the entire foundation for the building.
  • Up until 1935, the union building had remained unfinished. That year the building was transferred to the college from the Alumnia Association, opening up W.P.A. funds which allowed completion of the building, plus the addition of the East Wing.
  • The original union building was 72,000 square feet, and built at a cost of $443,149, and has since undergone four renovations adding an additional 114,406 square feet of space.
  • The last major addition to the building occurred in 1949, and was designed by architect Ralph Calder at a cost of $2,362,125. The project included a complete remodeling and the construction of the South Wing.
  • The MSU Union houses many different functions for the university and its students, including, but not limited to, a bowling alley, a food court, computer labs, a travel office, a United States Post Office branch, various retail and other amenities.
