  • The statue was dedicated on October 22, 1994.
  • This is the largest and tallest statue of an American hero. A Texas-sized tribute to General Sam Houston.
  • General Sam Houston was the first president of the Republic of Texas. He served from 1836 to 1838. He was re-elected again as governor in 1857 to 1861. He was the only governor in US history two be governor of two states. He was also governor of Tennessee from 1824 to 1827.
  • Built of 66,000 pounds of concrete and steel. The base is constructed of granite.
  • The statue was constructed in 10-foot sections made of concrete with internal steel bands for support. The outside skin is covered with a layer of fiberglass mesh.
  • The statue itself is 66 feet tall, but it stands atop a 10-foot base.
  • The tallest statue in Texas (including the base), it is visible from six miles away. Not counting the base it is the second tallest statue in Texas to the Dallas Zoo Giraffe in Dallas.
  • Designed by local sculptor David Adickes.
