Facts

  • In 1942, the two upper stories of the tower were blown up; by 1949, much of the remaining tower was dismantled and the one remaining story was topped off by a small dome in 1959.
  • The tower was restored to its original height and appearance during the late 1990s; the topping-out dome was hoisted to the top using a helicopter, in a procedure similar to that of 30 St Mary Axe in London.
