Facts

  • This bridge replaced the older Old Pecos High Bridge which was built in 1892. The new bridge was built 440 feet downstream and is larger. The old bridge was dismantled in 1949.
  • This bridge actually stands 322 feet tall, but with Lake Amistad Resevoir which was built back in the 1960s, the Pecos River rose 57 feet higher.
  • The bridge is 1,390 feet long.
  • This is the highest bridge in Texas.
  • This bridge carries both trains and automobile traffic.
  • Construction on the bridge began in August 1943.
  • On December 21, 1944 the first train crossed the bridge.
