Facts

  • Built in 1881 by a local residential real-estate developer to lure prospective buyers away from nearby Atlantic City.
  • The "building" has an observation deck on the roof 55 feet above the street.
  • In 1969 the building was almost demolished. Funds were put in place to restore the building. It was also moved 2 blocks down the street in 1970.
  • To enter the upper floors of the building a spiral staircase takes you to the top in the right rear leg of the elephant.
  • In 1976 the building was put on the National List of Historic Places.
  • James Vincent de Paul Lafferty, Jr.of Philadelphia, built the building in 1881. In 1882 he applied for a US patent to protect his idea for the elephant shaped building.
  • The main hall on the top floor is 16 feet by 25 feet.
