Twickenham is the home of England's Rugby Football Union. It is also used for national test matches and as a concert venue.
The stadium has capacity for 75,000 people, making it the largest sporting venue in the United Kingdom until the completion of the 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in 2006.
The land for the stadium was purchased in 1907, and work commenced in 1909. The stadium has been built in numerous phases; the West Stand was completed in 1932 but the stadium did not reach its current appearance until 1995.
A major redevelopment of the South Stand began in June 2005. It involves the construction of a new hotel, a performing arts complex, a health and leisure club, a new rugby store and improved function space. It will also increase capacity to 82,000 upon completion in 2007.
