Facts

  • In 1880 a gabled roof was added to the church building. The bell tower was also added that year.
  • The church stood across the street from the historic Texas Governor's Mansion built in 1856 by Abner Cook. The site is now occupied by a shaded parking lot.
  • This building was replaced by the newer First Baptist Church on the other side of downtown.
  • In 1880 the stained glass windows were installed which replaced less ornate square windows. The building also had electric lighting installed which was a rarity in 1880.
