Facts

  • After the fire of 1817, only the tower (without spire) and the choir remained from the original construction.
  • The church was inaugurated in 1415 despite being unfinished.
  • Fire again broke out in 1951 though on this occasion the restoration did not alter the general appearance of the church.
  • The original carillon which dated from 1520 counted 20 bells and was destroyed in the great fire of 1817. The current carillon is from 1953, has 41 bells and weights about 10 metric tons.
  • The tower was completed in 1462 and the spire in 1465.
  • The damaged part of the church was reconstructed in the neo-Classical style which took about three years.
