Facts

  • The walls of this keep have a thickness of about 4 m.
  • This is a remarkable example of English-Norman fortress architecture from the middle ages.
  • There used to be five floors in this keep, but today they’re all gone.
  • During the 13th century the fortress was completely reconstructed. A first enclosure was constructed 1328, while a second one was built between 1359 and 1377.
  • This stronghold was built to protect the northernmost border of the county of Hainaut against the county of Flanders.
