Facts

  • When completed, in all proportions it was the biggest ship elevator in the world.
  • The complete system is suspended on 112 fixed and 32 controllable steel cables.
  • This ship elevator actually consists of two water-filled counterweighted cages.
  • This ‘ship-elevator’ structure has three passenger elevators and two goods elevators.
  • The elevator itself travels a vertical distance of exactly 73.15 m.
  • Each cage is held in equilibrium by 8 fixed counterweights and 8 controllable counterweights.
  • The mechanical power to move the cage comes from four electric motors mechanically connected through gears.
  • The minimum force in the steel cables of the controllable counterweights is set at 100 kN.
  • The lock doors are constructed to stop boats with a weight of 2000 metric tons moving at 5 km/h.
  • The hoisting drum used to move the cage has diameter of 4.8 m and a weight of 72 metric tons. Four cables are wound on each drum: two are connected to the cage, whereas the other two are connected to the counterweights.
  • The hoisting drum rotates at a speed of 0.796 RPM.
  • The four electrical motors are six pole asynchronous motors, each with a maximum torque of 5800 Nm.
  • This elevator weighs about 200 000 metric tons.
