Facts

  • The main style of this building can be more precisely described as Brabant gothic.
  • On top of the tower there is a gold plated statue also known as ‘Hanske de Krijger’ (Hans the Warrior). This statue was made by silversmith Willem Blansterins from Oudenaarde.
  • This city hall has a nice collection of silver mostly from the 15th to the 18th century made by local and other renowned European craftsmen.
  • Together with Hôtel de Ville / Stadhuis (Brussels) and Stadhuis (Leuven), this building is considered as one of the most beautiful gothic city halls.
  • The city responsible Philip of Lalaing ordered the construction. Hendrik van Pede was the architect.
  • The last renovation works started in 1956 and were finished around the millennium change.
