Facts

  • The building will be primarily glass with a prominent corner bell tower.
  • It replaces the Lakepoint Tower proposal which was shelved after 2001.
  • Beneath the church is the mausoleum which has around 1,300 spaces for crypts and 1,450 spaces for those who have been cremated. 12 crypts have been set aside for the past, present and future Bishops of Oakland.
  • This is the new Cathedral church for the Oakland Roman Catholic Diocese. It replaces the St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.
  • The architects were recognized with a 2009 Honor Award from the National Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
