Facts

  • Excavation began in 2008 with the foundation construction commencing in 2010.
  • The foundation work up to street level was completed in 2013 when the building was placed on hold.
  • The initial design, by Foster + Partners, was slated to be 88 stories and 1,349 feet tall. It was designed as four bundled tubes with the tops sheared off like angled diamonds.
  • A new design, created by Bjarke Ingels Group, was commissioned in 2014. The firm was tasked with developing a concept that would appeal to its anchor tenants, 21st Century Fox and News Corp.
  • This new concept divides the skyscraper into seven stacked 'boxes' around a dozen stories each. Terraced setbacks on the east will cantilever out to the north. These cantilevered sections will feature news tickers that can only be seen when looking up. A more formal sheer wall faces west towards the Memorial Plaza.
  • Ironically, after the new design was revealed in June 2015, 21st Century Fox and News Corp. pulled out of plans to anchor the new tower in January 2016.
  • The building's central core is of reinforced concrete-encased steel, with an external structural steel frame; safety systems are designed to exceed both the Port Authority requirements and New York City building code.
  • The building is designed to achieve the gold rating from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program of the US Green Building Council.
