Facts

  • The history of this church starts in the 11th century, on the banks of the river Zenne, when a chapel was built to honor Saint Catharine.
  • A first church was built during the 14th century and was already enlarged in 1368.
  • In 1580, a tower and the choir were added in renaissance style.
  • Around 1800 the half gothic, half renaissance church was in decay.
  • The reconstruction phase was designed by Jozef Poelaert, who also designed the Palais de Justice / Justitiepaleis.
  • The pulpit in this church originates from the Sint-Romboutskathedraal and portrays the Catholic Church ruling the world through the Bible and Papacy.
