  • This guard tower was part of the first wall around Brussels, which had a length of 4km and was built at the end of 11th and the beginning of the 12th century.
  • This wall had seven gates and about fifty guard towers.
  • This tower stood at a corner of the ramparts and is therefore today called ‘corner tower’.
  • The tower was also close to the ‘Steenpoort’ gate, a prison for political offenders and criminals.
  • The tower is sometimes called after François Anneessens, Dean of the guilds imprisoned in 1719 in this prison close to the tower.
