Facts

  • The entire Woodward's Department Store complex, including its roof-top sign, was constructed in nine principal phases between 1903 and 1957.
  • The Woodward's store has been closed since 1993 after having gone bankrupt.
  • The famous W sign, erected in 1958, is 23 feet wide, 16'8" high and weighs 5,956 lbs.
  • The W sign is supported by a tower 80-feet high.
  • The W sign is illuminated by 652 incandescent 50-watt bulbs.
  • The W sign was turned off for 10 years and then restored and illuminated on May 22, 2003.
  • Listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register in July 1995 as an official city landmark.
  • January 29, 2003: the City of Vancouver purchased the site from the B.C. Government for $5.5 million, about a quarter what the province paid for it in 2001.
  • The W sign, once refurbished, will be set atop the renovated Heritage Building in 2009.
