  • The guard tower was during the Middle Ages the gate to the city of Halle.
  • This guard tower is the only part left of the 8km long ramparts, which surrounded Brussels during the Middle Ages.
  • In 1759 the guardtower was used as a prison and in the same way also by the French in 1794.
  • In 1824, it was decided to demolish the guard tower like all other parts of the ramparts, but due to its use as a prison, this was postponed.
  • In 1843 the city of Brussels, decided to change the building into a weaponry museum.
  • In 1860, the building was restored by architect Henry Beyaert and it ended up one third taller than the original.
