Facts

  • Said by many to be one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States, and by some accounts, the world.
  • One of four remaining lighthouses built by order of President George Washington.
  • Notable author and Portland resident Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a frequent visitor to the lighthouse in its early days, and it is said that his poem "The Lighthouse" was inspired by his visits to the site.
  • Though completed in 1790, it was first activated on January 10, 1791.
  • The structure's height was increased to its present status by 20 feet in 1864 after the wreck of a British immigrant vessel, creating a visible difference between the original rubblestone facade and newer portion constructed with brick.
