The St. Paul Central Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and made a St. Paul Heritage Preservation Site in 1979.
The east wing houses the James J. Hill Reference Library, financed largely through contributions by St. Paul railroad baron, James J. Hill. The library is a nationally-recognized business reference library, and is accessible to the public.
The James J. Hill Reference Library features a grand atrium open to three shelving mezzanines and two additional floors of storage and offices.
