Facts

  • The deep red, smooth bricks used on the facade were brought from St. Louis.
  • More than 786 tons of Alaskan sandstone were used in construction.
  • The tower bell and clock mechanism were made of solid brass and built by the E. Howard Watch & Clock Company of Boston.
  • There are 154 steps from the basement to the top of the clock tower.
  • Contractors were John Rigby and C.P. Wakeman.
  • In 1970, an elevator was added inside the bell tower to save time climbing stairs to wind the clock.
