Facts

  • This is often cited as the world's largest fountain.
  • Buckingham Fountain was a gift to Chicago from Kate Buckingham as a memorial to her brother Clarence Buckingham.
  • At night the fountain is illuminated in a spectacle of changing colors, often accompanied by music.
  • During the first twenty minutes of each hour a 150-foot jet rises from the center of the fountain, and is visible throughout Grant Park.
  • The fountain runs from the beginning of April to the first day of November (weather permitting), and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
  • The fountain includes an extensive array of scuptures by Marcel Francois Loyau, including horses spewing streams of water from their mouths towards the main fountain.
