The site of Tower of David and the Citadel has long been a historical and archaeological site of great importance.
Today the site is used mostly as a museum and tourist attraction.
The Citadel was built in the First Temple Period (960-586 BCE), with parts of a tower and the city walls built by the Hasmonean (first century BCE). The base of the tower was built by King Herod (37-4 BCE).
The Tower of David, mistakenly named due to wrong identification of the site as the City of David, refers mostly to the circular Herodian turret, one of the most prominent landmarks of Jerusalem.
On December 9th, 1917, General Allenby used this site for a ceremony marking the surrender of the Ottoman rule of Jerusalem, ending 4 centuries of power in the city.
