  • Spanning the Golden Gate between San Francisco and Marin County, this is one of the world's most recognized structural landmarks.
  • When built, the Golden Gate Bridge was the world's largest suspension bridge.
  • The distance between the two towers is 1,280 metres (4,200 ft).
  • The clearance between the deck and the mean high water mark is 67 metres (220 ft).
  • The bridge is equipped with foghorns to guide ships through safely on foggy days.
  • The suspension cables were supplied by the Roebling Company, whose founder designed the Brooklyn Bridge.
  • The bridge is not in fact painted red, but a colour known as 'International Orange'.
  • The towers rise to 152 metres (500 ft) above the roadway.
  • From 1937-2007 there were 1,218 recorded suicides from the bridge.
  • The total weight of the bridge as of completion in 1937 was 811,500,000 kg (894,500 tons) whereas in 1986 the total weight was reduced to 804,700,000 kg (887,000 tons) due to redecking.
