Facts

  • Construction was initiated by Emperor Vespasian around the year 72AD and was completed in 80AD during the reign of his son, Titus.
  • The Colosseum had 76 entrances with a further 4 dedicated to VIPs and gladiators.
  • With a capacity of around 50,000, this was the largest amphitheatre in the Roman empire.
  • The interior is constructed from brick and tufa whilst the outside is clad in travertine.
  • Around 100,000 cubic metres of marble were employed in the construction.
