Facts

  • During the years of the Nazi occupation (1941-1944), the building was used as one of the Athens headquarters of the occupation forces.
  • The main attraction of the center is the "Attica – The Department Store," occupying some 25,000 square meters of the total 65,000 on all 7 floors on the north side of the building.
  • When completed in 1940 this was the largest building in the Balkans.
  • Other attractions of the building are a large internal atrium and shopping and restaurant arcade, the 1900-seat "Pallas" cinema theater and the "Aliki" theater, formerly a cabaret during the 1950s where the great French singer Edith Piaf is rumoured to have performed once or twice...
  • The building consists of 9 interconnected building units built successively between 1929 and 1940, following a competition by the then Royal Hellenic Army Share and Insurance Fund (Metohiko Tameio Stratou) that took place in 1924.
