Facts

  • The monument was erected in memory of the roughly 6,000,000 Jews who were murdered by Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.
  • The monument covers around 19,000 square meters (4.7 acres), is situated at the Brandenburg Gate and manifests itself in the form of 2,711 concrete pillars (or stelae).
  • The stelae are are arranged in heights thus: 112 ground-level of 0.2 metres, 811 in heights ranging from 0.2 to 2 metres, 916 ranging in height from 2 to 3.5 metres and 872 ranging in height from 3.5 to 4.7 metres.
  • The varying heights of the stelae give the impression of a wave.
  • The stelae are specially treated to resist weathering and graffiti.
  • The memorial features an underground information centre of some 800 square metres.
  • The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was dedicated in May 2005 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
